NEC 2017 Code Updates for GFCIs – Part 2

As mentioned in Part 1, GFCI requirements have been updated in the NEC 2017 edition. Changes to NEC code regarding GFCIs have been included with every new release since 1971. Part 2 will discuss GFCI protection for areas Other Than Dwelling Units and Miscellaneous. Remember to call an experienced and licensed electrician for all home electrical projects for your safety and the best results. 

Other than Dwelling Units

For the locations below, GFCI protection is required for single-phase receptacles rated 50A or less that do not exceed 150V to ground, as well as 3-phase receptacles rated 100A or less that do not exceed 150V to ground installed.

  • Bathrooms – GFCI protection required for all receptacles.
  • Crawlspaces – GFCI protection is required for all receptacles.
  • Garages – GFCI protection required for all receptacles installed in garages, service bays, and similar areas, aside from exhibition halls and showrooms.
  • Indoor Wet Locations – GFCI protection required for all receptacles.
  • Kitchens – GFCI protection required for all receptacles.
  • Locker Rooms – GFCI protection required for all receptacles in locker rooms that have showering facilities.
  • Outdoors – GFCI protection required for all receptacles.
  • Rooftops – GFCI protection required for all receptacles.
  • Sinks – GFCI protection required for all receptacles within 6 feet from a bowl or sink’s inside edge.
  • Unfinished Portions of Basements – GFCI protection required for all receptacles.

Miscellaneous

  • Boat Hoist, Dwelling Unit – GFCI protection required for boat hoist outlets that do not exceed 240V.
  • Boathouse, Dwelling Unit – Required for 15A and 20A 125V receptacles.
  • Crawl Space Lighting Outlets, Dwelling Unit – GFCI protection required for 120V lighting outlets.
  • Dishwasher: Dwelling Unit – GFCI protection required for outlets powering dishwashers.
