Spring Electrical Tips for Your Home

The arrival of spring typically means doing some spring cleaning around the house. It is also a good time for homeowners to have their home’s electrical system checked out. Call a licensed electrician to perform regular maintenance and needed repairs to keep your home and family safe.

Bathroom & Kitchen

A solid safety practice is ensuring that every kitchen countertop appliance is plugged into a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet to prevent electric shocks. GFCI outlets should be installed in every area of the home that has a water source and that means both the kitchen and laundry room. Be sure to vacuum the cobwebs and dust behind the refrigerator so that it can run more efficiently.

Laundry Room

As set forth by the NEC (National Electric Code), the 20-amp designated receptacle for a washing machine should have GFCI protection. In addition, new electric dryers require a special appliance cord with a 4-prong plug, and this should be properly installed by an electrician. It’s also a good idea to clean out the lint trap and areas around the dryer to prevent fire hazards.

Interior Areas Around the Home

The trend has been for homes to make the transition to CFL and LED bulbs that have significantly longer service lives than incandescent bulbs. Their only disadvantage is building up a thick coating of dust as time passes. They should be cleaned occasionally to bring back their maximum brightness.

When it is spring and summer, ensure your home’s ceiling fans push air toward the floor. This will allow the cool air from the air conditioner vents to settle lower in the room, allowing the AC to be set at a higher temperature setting while conserving power. Get the help of a licensed electrician to install ceiling fans at your home.
