Get Ready for Rough Weather With a Standby Generator – Part 1

The Mid-Atlantic of the U.S. occasionally gets battered by rough weather, which can happen any time of the year. The following will first cover three common extreme weather events that can strike any part of Maryland. We will then focus on the two most extreme weather events, hurricanes and tornadoes. The final part will cover the best way for preparing for power outages that severe weather might cause.

Flash Floods

Extremely heavy rain for short periods can lead to flash floods. They happen so suddenly, that they can be deadly for anyone in the affected area. In May 2018, the historic Main Street of Ellicott City, Maryland flooded after more than eight inches of rain fell in only two hours.

Steady rain for a long period can cause flooding that can be very disruptive to our lives. Floods occasionally cut utility power, and dealing with an outage during a rainstorm can present great difficulties for every household without an emergency power source.

Thunderstorms

Lightning strikes are basically gigantic sparks of static electricity generated by storms. A rainstorm where thunder is heard is a thunderstorm. Quite common, thunderstorms number about 100,000 every year in the U.S. Winds approaching 60 mph can be produced by severe thunderstorms, leading to downed power lines and electrical outages.

Winter Storms

Snowfall in Maryland can vary significantly by county. Anne Arundel County averages 20 inches annually. Winter storms can deliver freezing rain, heavy snow, ice, sleet, and very low temperatures. A potent mix of these elements can result in a power outage that lasts several days.

Part 2 will cover Tornadoes, Hurricanes, and The Best Way for Preparing for Power Outages.
