Smart Features for Your Home’s Thermostat – Part 2

As covered in Part 1, smart thermostats can connect to the Wi-Fi network in your home, letting you control their features from a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Part 2 will cover a smart thermostat’s key features that your household can benefit from.

Room Sensors

Typically a thermostat detects the temperature of just the air surrounding it. Room sensors are needed to determine the proper comfort setting for each area in your home, and shaped like a button, a room sensor monitors a room’s temperature. In addition, it can transmit data to a thermostat indicating whether a room is occupied, so it can automatically adjust your home’s HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) system.

Temperature Zones

Most homeowners know the areas, floors, and rooms in their homes that are warmer or cooler. You can create temperature zones by combining room sensors with a smart thermostat. Controlling each zone’s environment can reduce energy costs significantly while maintaining a more comfortable home during the year.

Geofencing

Once you have downloaded a smart thermostat app on a mobile device, its geofencing feature can be used. A geofence is an electronic boundary that surrounds the perimeter of your home’s property lines. When you pass the boundary carrying a mobile device with the geofencing app, it will automatically set the thermostat. Those who commute to work daily will realize significant energy savings.

Energy Tracking

Smart thermostats can provide energy tracking reports based on monitoring home areas’ energy usage. Studying the results will let you make the adjustments needed for your home’s temperature settings to save on utility bills.

Alerts

Homeowners far from home on vacation can be alerted when an unusual temperature change occurs. For example, a smart thermostat can transmit an alert warning a homeowner that the water inside pipes may freeze when the temperature drops below freezing. The homeowner can then call a professional to remedy the problem before any pipes break and cause flooding and damage to their home.
