The Workplace’s Top 10 Electrical Hazards – Part 2

As discussed in Part 1, it is critical for employers to diligently address dangers present in the workplace. A sound safety policy will help protect employees from accidents involving electricity. Consult with a licensed electrician for planning and implementation. The following lists the last five of the Top 10 Electrical Hazards.

6) Panel Schedules Overlooked

The importance of panel schedules should not be overlooked. Misidentified components are a danger, so accuracy is critical. Update labels immediately with every change of configuration.

7) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Lacking

PPE is equipment provides protection to users against workplace health or safety risks at work. PPE includes items such as protective eyewear, safety helmets, gloves, safety footwear, and respiratory equipment. Appropriate equipment will promote safety when working with wiring or electrical equipment.

8) Safety Neglected

Safety exits should be clearly marked and remain accessible. Staff members should be familiar with emergency power shutdown procedures. An electrical contractor should be retained for a safety inspection of the premises.

9) Untrained Workers

Employees who work with electrical equipment or wiring should undergo regular, scheduled training for required certification and safety.

10) Warning Signs Missing

Clear signage should indicate electrical hazards, alerting all employees for the prevention of accidents.

According to the handout, its aim “is to provide comprehensive on-site training to high-risk workers (i.e. skilled trades and maintenance workers) and management on the requirements of Sub Part S, and the prevention of serious injuries from electrical hazards at their worksites. Participants will develop understanding of the requirements of OSHA Sub Part “S” and NFPA, 70E and will be able to identify and reduce or eliminate electrical safety hazards in their workplace. Electrical Safe Work Practices including electrical safety principles, guidelines for qualification of personnel, job planning requirements and Management and Personal Responsibility will be covered”
